Methods of employing scanning moiré at high magnification are developed and demonstrated. Modern lithographic techniques for
producing custom moiré gratings with a frequency up to 250l/mm are described. On a probing station equipped with a video system, pseudo-color moiré fringes are produced using the scannning
lines of the color charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera. Fringe multiplication from 1 to 5 is possible with correct combinations
of magnification and grating pitch. An analysis is given to show that strain sensitivity depends only on the number of scanning
lines used to record the image. The grating pitch and the magnification are important because they reduce the gage length
of the strain measurement. The high-magnification scanning moiré was used to study plastic- strain fields in an aluminum tensile
specimen. Local disturbances in the strain field were observed at 2 to 2.5 percent applied strain. These discontinuities became

In order to interpret concentration measurements using planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF), it is necessary to understand the systematic and statistical errors that accompany those measurements. High-power lasers provide both increased signal-to-noise ratios (desirable) and intensity-induced deviations from linearity (undesirable). This paper reviews and argues for modification of current criteria for use of fluorophores for quantitative PLIF imaging, and makes use of a modified new protocol to qualify the fluorophore Rhodamine-WT for use in quantitative PLIF imaging. Nanoindentation experiments have shown that microstructural inhomogeneities across the surface of gold thin films lead to position-dependent nanoindentation behavior [Phys. Rev. B (2002), to be submitted]. The rationale for such behavior was based on the availability of dislocation sources at the grain boundary for initiating plasticity. In order to verify or refute this theory, a computational approach has been pursued. Here, a simulation study of the initial stages of indentation using the embedded atom method (EAM) is presented. First, the principles of the EAM are given, and a comparison is made between atomistic simulations and continuum models for elastic deformation. Then, the mechanism of dislocation nucleation in single crystalline gold is analyzed, and the effects of elastic anisotropy are considered. Finally, a systematic study of the indentation response in the proximity of a high angle, high sigma (low symmetry) grain boundary is presented; indentation behavior is simulated for varying indenter positions relative to the boundary. The results indicate that high angle grain boundaries are a ready source of dislocations in indentation-induced deformation. 相似文献

Adaptive estimation procedures have gained significant attention by the research community to perform real-time identification of non-linear hysteretic structural systems under arbitrary dynamic excitations. Such techniques promise to provide real-time, robust tracking of system response as well as the ability to track time variation within the system being modeled. An overview of some of the authors’ previous work in this area is presented, along with a discussion of some of the emerging issues being tackled with regard to this class of problems. The trade-offs between parametric-based modeling and non-parametric modeling of non-linear hysteretic dynamic system behavior are discussed. Particular attention is given to (1) the effects of over- and under-parameterization on parameter convergence and system output tracking performance, (2) identifiability in multi-degree-of-freedom structural systems, (3) trade-offs in setting user-defined parameters for adaptive laws, and (4) the effects of noise on measurement integration. Both simulation and experimental results indicating the performance of the parametric and non-parametric methods are presented and their implications are discussed in the context of adaptive structures and structural health monitoring. 相似文献

The objective of this study is to understand the flow structures of weak and strong spherical blast waves either propagating
in a free field or interacting with a flat plate. A 5th-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme with a 4th-order
Runge-Kutta method is employed to solve the compressible Euler/Navier-Stokes equations in a finite volume approach. The real-gas
effects are taken into account when high temperature occurs. A shock-tube problem with the real-gas effect is first tested
in order to verify the solver accuracy. Moreover, unsteady shock waves moving over a stationary wedge with various wedge angles,
resulting in different types of shock wave reflections, are also tested. It is found that the computed results agreed well
with the existing data. Second, the propagation of a weak spherical blast wave, created by rupture of a high-pressure isothermal
sphere, in a free field is studied. It is found that there are three minor shock waves moving behind the main shock. Third,
the problem of a strong blast wave interacting with a flat plate is investigated. The flow structures associated with single
and double Mach reflections are reported in detail. It is found that there are at least three local high-pressure regions
near the flat plate.

In this paper an initial-boundary value problem for a weakly nonlinear string(or wave) equation with non-classical boundary conditions is considered. Oneend of the string is assumed to be fixed and the other end of the string isattached to a spring-mass-dashpot system, where the damping generated by thedashpot is assumed to be small. This problem can be regarded as a rather simple model describing oscillationsof flexible structures such as suspension bridges or overhead transmission lines in a windfield. A multiple-timescales perturbation method will be usedto construct formal asymptotic approximations of the solution. It will also beshown that all solutions tend to zero for a sufficiently large value of thedamping parameter. A direct shear test with a superimposed impact was used to simulate the action of a track on the soil surface and to study the effect on soil surface properties. Results showed that impact increased bulk density, reduced saturated hydraulic conductivity and decreased cone penetrometer resistance. An impact plus shear treatment reduced the residual shear strength to approximately 60 kPa compared with 85 kPa for a shear only treatment. Water tension also greatly influenced the changes measured with the order of greatest change being −5>−10>−60>t-100>−300 kPa. The results are discussed with respect to soil trafficability and soil structural change with vehicle passage. 相似文献

An experimental investigation of cocurrent bubble flow in 0.0254 m and 0.0508 m diameter horizontal pipelines has been performed. Gas and liquid mass velocities ranged from 0.00955 to 0.675 and 2720 to 6040 kg/m2 sec, respectively, and gas-phase holdups or void fractions ranged from 0.13 to 7.59%.High speed motion pictures revealed that the gas, introduced into the liquid with a concentric nozzle, emerged in the form of a rough jet which was ultimately sheared into 1 times; 10minus;3 to 3 times; 10minus;3m diameter bubbles. Approximately 4 meters downstream from the nozzle, a well developed bubble flow was observed where bubble number density and axial velocity were constant with respect to axial position in the pipeline. Bubble velocities ranged from 0.001 to 0.57 m/sec greater than the average liquid velocities. Bubble radial and circumferential spatial distributions were found to be a strong function of the degree of turbulence in the liquid phase. Because of these turbulent flow conditions, bubble shapes were much different than those of equivalent diameter bubbles rising in stagnant liquids. A sphere-ellipsoid of revolution model was developed for characterization of bubble shape and computation of gas-liquid interfacial area and two-phase pressure drop. 相似文献

Experimental and theoretical studies of edge effects in rectangular composite strips under tension are discussed. The objective of the study was to investigate the effect of various parameters, including reinforcement material, fiber orientation and the structure of the reinforcement, on the various quantities which are observed in the vicinity of free edges in multidirectionally reinforced laminates. Of particular interest was the confirmation of theoretical results related to differences in response of graphite- and boron-reinforced laminates. Experiments consisted of moiré measurements of surface-displacement patterns which were compared with theoretical predictions, and examination of failure levels. The experiments were carried out on AVCO 5505 boron and Whitaker 5206 MODMOR II graphite-reinforced angle-ply laminates in which both stacking sequence and fiber orientation were varied parametrically. Moiré techniques were developed which allowed observation of displacements on both the wide surface and along the narrow edge of 1 in.-wide × 16-ply-thick (.085 in.-.105 in.) laminates. 相似文献

The technique to determine by capacitance measurements heat transfer, thermal transport and dielectric properties of fluids introduced recently is now analyzed for a simple system of spherical geometry. The temperature distribution under programmed heat input to a fluid annulus between solid walls is computed by finite difference method for the determination of the capacitance time function of the arrangement. A system of heavy wall structure and heated long enough will produce a capacitance-time curve which is a function of thermal conductivity only. Thermal diffusivity is of influence in thin wall systems. The capacitance change of a heavy wall arrangement is related to the thermal conductivity of the test fluid by a modified Fourier equation. This equation describes the heat flow through the fluid layer but includes the thermal expansion of the solid walls. The change of geometry with T is therefore accounted for. For other multicomposite structures the Fourier equation must be further modified by including the thermal expansion of all materials of the structure and possibly also their compressibilities.

Zusammenfassung Die kürzlich eingeführte Methode der Bestimmung von Wärmeübergang, thermischen Transport und dielektrischen Größen mittels Kapazitäts-Zeit-Messung wird analysiert für ein einfaches kugeliges System. Die Temperaturverteilung in der Flüssigkeit im Kugelspalt zwischen zwei festen Körpern wird für konstante Wärmezufuhr von außen mittels der Differenzmethode bestimmt und daraus die Kapazitäts-Zeit-Funktion ermittelt. Es wird gezeigt, daß die Kapazitäts-Zeit-Kurve nur eine Funktion der Wärmeleitzahl ist für den Fall dickwandiger Anordnungen. Für dünnwandige Systeme wird sie auch abhängig von der Temperaturleitzahl. Es wird eine modifizierte Fourier-Gleichung eingeführt, die den Wärmetransport durch die Flüssigkeit beschreibt, dabei aber die Änderung der Geometrie der Schicht berücksichtigt, die sich wegen der thermischen Ausdehnung der festen Wände bei der Einstellung der Temperaturdifferenz ergibt. Für andere mehrschichtige Körper muß die Fourier-Gleichung weiterhin modifiziert werden durch Berücksichtigung der thermischen Ausdehnungskoeffizienten aller beteiligten Materialien und möglicherweise auch ihrer Kompressibilitäten.
